KŌTARE IN RAUPŌ

The Story Behind the Painting

Kōtare in the Raupō

Two kōtare sat quietly among the raupō at the edge of a still New Zealand wetland.

The younger bird gazed beyond the reeds toward the distant hills.

"What lies out there?" it asked.

The older kōtare, wise from many seasons on the river, replied,

"Places to explore, fish to find, and winds to follow. But remember—the best journeys begin with knowing where home is."

As the sun rose over the water, the raupō glowed gold and the wetland came alive with birdsong. Side by side, the two kōtare watched the new day unfold—one dreaming of adventures ahead, the other quietly guarding the peace of the place they called home.
