The Story Behind the Painting

Mt Difficulty - Golden Glowing Vineyard South Island,Nz

Frequent journeys through New Zealand's South Island have provided endless inspiration for my work, and nowhere more so than Central Otago. The region is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, where rugged mountain ranges, wide valleys, vineyards, and open skies create an ever-changing palette of colour throughout the seasons. From the golden tones of autumn to the soft purples, blues, and ochres of the surrounding hills, every visit reveals a new combination of light and hue.

This painting was inspired by a stop at the beautiful Mt Difficulty Winery near Bannockburn. Looking across the vineyard rows towards the sunlit hills beyond, I was struck by the contrast between the ordered geometry of the vines and the wild, sculpted forms of the mountains. The clear Central Otago light brought every contour and colour to life, creating a scene that seemed to glow from within.

Central Otago's unique landscape, shaped by its semi-arid climate, historic gold-mining heritage, and world-renowned vineyards, continues to captivate me. This work is my attempt to capture not only the beauty of the view, but also the sense of wonder that accompanies every journey through this remarkable region.
