The Story Behind the Painting

Christmas on the Māhia Coast

Some places never really leave us.

No matter how many years pass, or how many roads we travel, there are landscapes that remain stitched into our memories. For the client who commissioned this painting, Māhia is one of those places—a place of belonging, of holidays, family gatherings, and the enduring pull of home.

In this artwork, the sweeping curve of the beach leads the eye towards the rugged white cliffs and green hills of the Māhia Peninsula. The sea lies calm beneath a soft summer sky, capturing the quiet beauty that so many New Zealanders associate with long days by the coast.

In the foreground, vibrant pōhutukawa blossoms burst into bloom. Their rich crimson flowers are a celebration of the season, earning the pōhutukawa its affectionate title as New Zealand's Christmas Tree. While much of the world imagines Christmas wrapped in snow and winter, here in the Southern Hemisphere it arrives with warmth, salt air, bare feet on sandy beaches, and the brilliant red canopy of flowering pōhutukawa.

For the collector, these blossoms are more than a seasonal symbol. They are a reminder of summer holidays spent at the family bach, of children exploring rock pools, of shared meals after long days in the sun, and of returning year after year to a coastline woven into personal history.

The painting seeks to capture not only the beauty of Mahia, but also the feeling of coming home. The familiar hills standing watch over the bay, the endless horizon, and the festive pōhutukawa blossoms together tell a story of place, memory, and connection.

It is a celebration of a uniquely New Zealand Christmas—a season painted not in white, but in shades of blue ocean, golden sand, green hills, and brilliant red flowers. A reminder that some landscapes become part of who we are, and that wherever life takes us, there is comfort in knowing that these treasured places are waiting to welcome us back.
