The Story Behind the Painting
Lake Pukaki-Southern Lake South Island, Nz
Few places in New Zealand leave such a lasting impression as Lake Pukaki. Located in the heart of the Mackenzie Basin, this magnificent glacial lake is renowned for its extraordinary turquoise waters, created by finely ground rock particles carried from the Southern Alps by ancient glaciers. On a calm day, the lake becomes a mirror, reflecting the surrounding mountain ranges and the ever-changing South Island sky.
This painting was inspired by one of our many journeys through the South Island. I was captivated by the remarkable clarity of the water and the tranquil atmosphere that seemed to embrace the entire landscape. The smooth rocks along the shoreline lead the eye across the luminous blue lake toward the distant snow-capped peaks, creating a sense of peace and endless space.
The subtle variations of blue, from the soft aquamarine shallows to the deeper tones of the lake and mountains beyond, perfectly illustrate nature's ability to create its own palette of colours. Lake Pukaki is one of those places that invites quiet reflection and reminds us of the raw beauty that makes New Zealand's South Island so unforgettable.
This painting captures a moment of stillness and wonder beside one of New Zealand's most iconic alpine landscapes.
