Tōrea – Governors of the Seashore

There is a special energy along the shoreline at Ōhope Beach, where land, sea, and sky meet in a constant rhythm of movement and change. On this day, my attention was drawn not only to the powerful surf rolling in from the Pacific, but also to the tōrea (oystercatchers) quietly searching the water's edge. Their confidence and presence seemed to embody the spirit of the coast, as though they were the true guardians of this wild and beautiful place. The distant outline of Whakaari/White Island on the horizon added a sense of scale and timelessness, while the foaming waves created an ever-changing tapestry of light and colour. Through this painting, I wanted to capture both the strength of the ocean and the quiet resilience of the tōrea, the enduring governors of New Zealand's seashores.
