Tūī-Kōwhai Crowned In Gold

The Story Behind the Painting

Tūī-Kōwhai Crowned In Gold

The Tūī has always captured my imagination with its bold character, shimmering plumage, and unmistakable voice. In this painting, I have reimagined this treasured native bird as a king among New Zealand’s feathered inhabitants—a proud and noble guardian of the forests of Aotearoa. Resting upon its head is a crown of golden Kōwhai blossoms, symbolising honour, vitality, and a deep connection to the land. The vibrant gold of the Kōwhai contrasts beautifully against the Tūī’s iridescent blue-black feathers, creating a celebration of two iconic species that are uniquely New Zealand.

More than a portrait, this artwork is a tribute to the beauty, resilience, and majesty of our native wildlife. Through the symbolism of the crown, I wanted to elevate the Tūī beyond a bird of the bush and present it as a royal emblem of New Zealand’s natural heritage—proud, elegant, and deserving of admiration and protection.
